Originally built in the 11th century as a fortification and defence system, this massive complex fell into enemy hands during the Napoleonic Wars in the 18th century and was not destroyed because it was surrendered without a fight. Although a fire and general decay over time have taken their toll on the fabric of the building, extensive and ongoing renovations mean that this landmark can still be seen in all its glory today.
